Plain and simple… There just isn’t enough Housing on Maui for our Island Residents. Supply and demand dictates that with a housing shortage comes rising rental rates making landlords and investors happy but residents increasingly frustrated. Tiny homes have been in the news lately as a possible affordable solution to our housing shortage.
In my opinion, a common sense approach to tiny homes would be a win win for all parties involved. Tiny homes on wheels will need to be registered with the DMV but do not need a building permit as long as they are not connected to any county infrastructure (sewer, water or electric). No building permits streamlines the process. These “Tiny Homes on Wheels” are still subject to county zoning requirements but if a Maui Property legally allows for an Ohana you can potentially park a Tiny Home on your lot in weeks instead of the month it takes to apply for a permit, be approved, and begin construction.
So how does it pencil out? A quick internet search will show results for companies that build tiny homes on wheels here in Hawaii. 100% financing is available with payments as low as $316 per month. Hmmm… how much can a “Tiny Home Ohana” rent for on Maui? I really don’t have the answer to that but it appears have to comfortable cashflow and provide the island with another much needed affordable housing option.
