Hana in Hawaiian means “Craft or Work.” Located 52 miles from Kahului Airport. Hana is considers the Rainforest of Maui. Between 500-800 AD the town of Hana was first settled by Polynesians. Later the first Sugar Plantation was started by George Wilfong in 1849 and a continuous expansion began. By 1883 there were a total of 6 Sugar Plantations in operation. The Industry began to gradually fade and the last Sugar Plantation closed in 1946. In 1926 Hana Highway was completed, this opened the way for more people to experience this remote coastal rainforest gem. The Ka-uiki Inn opened which later became Hana Hotel then Hotel Travaasa propelled the economy towards Tourism.
November 11, 1950 Hana Airport opened providing flights to Kahului, Oahu and The Big Island.
